KCSE 2026 Results in Kenya [ Release Date and How to Check ]

KCSE 2026 results in Kenya are expected in January 2027, once the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) finishes marking and the Cabinet Secretary for Education announces them. KNEC has not given an official release date yet. Results for the last three KCSE classes came out between 8 and 9 January, so the second week of January 2027 is the most likely window. Candidates check their results online on the KNEC results portal at results.knec.ac.ke using their index number and one of their registered names.

This guide covers when KCSE 2026 results are likely to be released, how to check KCSE results online, why the SMS code no longer works, how the KCSE grading system works, what to do if a result looks wrong, and how to collect the KCSE certificate. It also explains what the results mean for KUCCPS placement in 2027.

KCSE 2026 Examination Dates at a Glance

The 2026 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examination is the largest in the history of the council. Just over one million candidates are registered for KCSE 2026, the first time the number has passed the one-million mark, up from about 993,000 candidates who sat the 2025 examination. KCSE runs alongside KPSEA and KJSEA, which brings the total number of learners sitting national assessments in 2026 to about 3.6 million.

Orals and practicals opened on Monday, 19 October 2026. The written papers start in early November and the last paper is set for Friday, 20 November 2026. Marking follows straight after, and the results come out about seven weeks after the last paper.

Stage Date
Rehearsal day Friday, 16 October 2026
Orals and practicals begin Monday, 19 October 2026
Main written papers begin Early November 2026 (see the KNEC timetable)
Last paper Friday, 20 November 2026
Marking Late November to December 2026
Results release Expected January 2027 (date not yet confirmed)

Morning sessions start at 8am and afternoon sessions start at 2pm. Candidates who still have papers to sit should follow the official KNEC timetable, which their school displays, because any change is announced there first.

When Will KCSE 2026 Results Be Released?

No official release date for KCSE 2026 results exists yet. KNEC and the Ministry of Education announce the date only a day or two before the release, usually through a press statement. The release normally happens at a public event where the Education Cabinet Secretary reads out the national performance summary before the portal opens to candidates.

The recent pattern gives a reliable guide. The 2025 KCSE results came out on Friday, 9 January 2026, at a school in Eldoret. The 2024 results came out on 9 January 2025 and the 2023 results on 8 January 2024. In each case, the exam ended in November and results followed in the second week of January. The 2026 exam ends on 20 November, a little later than the 2025 exam, which ended on 14 November. A small shift in the release date is therefore possible, but the second week of January 2027 remains the most likely period.

KCSE year Exam ended Results released
KCSE 2023 November 2023 8 January 2024
KCSE 2024 November 2024 9 January 2025
KCSE 2025 14 November 2025 9 January 2026
KCSE 2026 20 November 2026 Expected January 2027

Check the official KNEC website for the confirmed date. Messages on WhatsApp, Telegram or social media that give an early date or offer to “release” results in advance are not official.

How to Check KCSE 2026 Results Online

Since the 2025 results, KCSE results are available online only. KNEC publishes a link on its main website and also opens the dedicated results portal. The steps below follow the process used for the most recent release.

  1. Open a browser on a phone or computer and go to results.knec.ac.ke, or open the KNEC website and click the KCSE results link.
  2. Read and accept the privacy and access notice shown on the page.
  3. Enter your full KCSE index number exactly as it appears on your registration documents. The index number has the school code followed by the candidate number.
  4. Enter one of your names exactly as it was spelled during registration.
  5. Click the search button and wait for the result slip to load.
  6. Check the subject grades, the mean grade and the total points, then take a screenshot or print the page for your records.

On release day the portal receives heavy traffic and may load slowly or fail for a few hours. This happened briefly in January 2026 before the portal settled. If the page does not load, wait and try again later in the day or early the next morning rather than paying anyone to check for you.

What You Need to Check KCSE Results

  • Your KCSE 2026 index number
  • One of your registered names, spelled as on your registration
  • A phone or computer with internet access

Can I Check KCSE Results via SMS 20076?

For many years, candidates sent their index number followed by “KCSE” to the short code 20076. That service was stopped for the 2025 results, and the Ministry stated that results would be accessed online through the KNEC portal. Unless KNEC announces that the SMS service is back for 2026, candidates should not rely on the 20076 code and should not pay for SMS services that claim to deliver results.

Older guides that still describe the SMS method were written for earlier years. The official KNEC statement on release day confirms which methods are active, so read it before trying any other route.

Checking KCSE Results Through Your School

Schools receive the results for all their candidates through the KNEC examination portal. Principals can print a full results list for the centre, and many schools display results on the notice board or share them with candidates who visit. A candidate who cannot reach the online portal can visit the school or contact the principal to get the result. Schools also help with queries, because KNEC accepts result queries only through the head of the institution.

KCSE Grading System Explained

KCSE uses a 12-point scale. Each subject receives a letter grade, and the best seven subjects (following the KNEC subject group rules) produce a total point score. The mean grade comes from those points.

Grade Points Grade Points
A 12 C 6
A- 11 C- 5
B+ 10 D+ 4
B 9 D 3
B- 8 D- 2
C+ 7 E 1

The mean grade decides which level of study a candidate can join. A mean grade of C+ and above is the minimum for degree programmes at public and private universities. A C (plain) or C- usually leads to diploma programmes, while D+ and D grades open certificate courses. Artisan courses at TVET colleges accept lower grades. Each course also has its own cluster subject requirements, so the mean grade alone does not decide placement.

Withheld and Cancelled Results

Some candidates may find “X” or “Y” on their result slip instead of a grade. A “Y” means the result in that subject is cancelled because of an examination irregularity. An “X” usually means the candidate was absent for a paper. A result marked as withheld means KNEC is still investigating. Candidates in this position should speak to the school principal, who follows up with KNEC.

What to Do If Your KCSE Result Looks Wrong

A candidate who believes a grade is wrong can lodge a query. For the 2025 results, queries had to go through the head of the candidate’s institution within 30 days of the release, and queries made after 30 days attracted a fee. The usual reasons for a query include a missing subject, a wrong name or a grade that does not match the candidate’s performance.

  1. Check the result carefully and note the exact problem.
  2. Visit your former school and explain the issue to the principal.
  3. The principal submits the query to KNEC through the official channel.
  4. Wait for the KNEC response, which comes through the school.

Re-marking is a formal process with a fee. Candidates should confirm the current fee and the deadline in the KNEC release statement.

How to Collect the KCSE 2026 Certificate

KCSE certificates are not ready on the day of the results. KNEC prints them later in the year after the results release, and the Ministry announces when they are available. Under a change introduced to stop schools from holding certificates over unpaid fees, candidates now collect their KCSE certificates from the sub-county education office, not from their former school.

To collect the certificate, a candidate normally needs the national ID or birth certificate, the index number and a copy of the result slip. A candidate who cannot collect in person should ask the sub-county office about the rules for a representative before sending anyone.

KCSE 2026 Results and KUCCPS Placement in 2027

The KCSE result is the key document for joining universities, TVET colleges, KMTC and teacher training colleges. After the results release, the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) opens its student portal for the 2026 KCSE class. In 2026, the application window for the 2025 class ran from 7 April to 6 May, so the 2027 window for the 2026 class is likely to open a few months after the results.

Candidates should use the time between the results and the KUCCPS window to compare courses, check cluster subject requirements and confirm their KCSE grades. Students who need funding should also prepare for the HELB and Higher Education Financing application, which follows placement.

Tips for KCSE 2026 Candidates Waiting for Results

  • Keep your index number safe. It is needed to check results, apply to KUCCPS and collect the certificate.
  • Make sure the names on your registration match your national ID or birth certificate, because the portal uses the registered name.
  • Follow only official channels: the KNEC website, the Ministry of Education and your school.
  • Ignore anyone who offers to change grades or release results early for money. KNEC treats this as fraud.
  • Start researching courses now so you are ready when the KUCCPS portal opens.
