Eastcape Midlands TVET College (often shortened to EMC or EMCOL) is a public technical and vocational college in the Eastern Cape, with its head office in Kariega (Uitenhage) and campuses across the Nelson Mandela Bay area, Makhanda (Grahamstown) and Graaff-Reinet. It offers NC(V) programmes, NATED (Report 191) programmes and occupational qualifications. Applications are made on the college’s online system, and funding is applied for separately through NSFAS.
This guide covers the campuses, the programmes offered at each one, entry requirements, application timing, documents, funding and the application steps for 2026/2027. Dates for the 2027 intake are not fully confirmed in the sources reviewed, so they are described as patterns and should be checked on the college’s website before applying.
About Eastcape Midlands TVET College
The college is a public institution under the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). It was formed through the merger of earlier colleges in Uitenhage, KwaNobuhle, Makhanda and Graaff-Reinet, and it now operates as one college with nine campuses. Its qualifications are nationally registered, and tuition for eligible students is subsidised by government.
The college serves school leavers, students who left school early and adults who want a trade or a business qualification. Its main fields are engineering, business and management, finance and accounting, hospitality and tourism, information technology, and trades such as electrician, millwright and bricklayer.

Programme Types at the College
- NC(V) (National Certificate Vocational): a full-time qualification at Levels 2, 3 and 4 that combines theory with practical training. It is the main route for students who leave school after Grade 9 or Grade 10, or who finish Grade 12.
- NATED (Report 191), N1 to N6: engineering programmes start at N1 and business programmes usually start at N4. After N6 and the required work experience, a student can qualify for a National Diploma.
- Occupational and skills programmes: shorter, trade-focused qualifications that prepare students for a specific job, such as electrician, bricklayer or early childhood development practitioner.
NC(V) Programmes
The NC(V) fields linked to the college include:
- Finance, Economics and Accounting
- Marketing
- Tourism
- Hospitality
- Office Administration
- Safety in Society
- Engineering and Related Design
- Electrical Infrastructure Construction
- Information Technology and Computer Science
- Programming and Robotics
Each NC(V) programme runs for three levels over three years. Students study fundamental subjects such as English, Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy and Life Orientation, together with vocational subjects for the chosen field. Assessment includes tests, practical work and a final examination at each level.
NATED Report 191 Programmes
NATED programmes at the college are grouped into engineering and business streams.
- Engineering: Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
- Business: Business Management, Financial Management, Human Resource Management, Marketing Management and Management Assistant.
- Legal and office: Legal Secretary and related office practice programmes.
Each N level is completed in a trimester or semester, depending on the programme. Students move up one level at a time after passing the examinations.
Occupational and Skills Programmes
Occupational qualifications are the newer route that is replacing parts of the older N4 to N6 system. Programmes listed for the college include Electrician, Millwright, Mechanical Fitter, Welding, Automotive Motor Mechanic, Bricklayer, Solar PV Service Technician, Bookkeeping, Marketing Coordinator, Tourist Information Officer, Early Childhood Development Practitioner, and Management Assistant. Some campuses also run practical skills training and a Pre-Vocational Learning Programme (PLP) for students who need preparation before a full qualification.
Entry Requirements
Requirements depend on the programme and level. The general pattern is shown below.
| Programme | Usual minimum entry |
|---|---|
| NC(V) Level 2 | Grade 9 completed (some fields prefer Grade 10 or 12) |
| NATED engineering N1 to N3 | Grade 9 with Mathematics and Physical Science |
| NATED business N4 to N6 | Grade 12 / National Senior Certificate, or the relevant N3 |
| Occupational programmes | Set per programme; check the entry rules for the trade |
TVET colleges do not use a university-style APS score for most programmes. Meeting the requirement for one programme does not mean meeting it for another, so check each programme separately.
Eastcape Midlands TVET College Application Dates 2026/2027
TVET colleges normally open applications for the following academic year in the second half of the year. For the 2027 intake, reports point to an online window around September 2026, but the college’s own confirmation of closing dates is not available in the sources reviewed. Because that period may already have passed, check the college website now for any late or second-round intake.
Colleges commonly run a main intake for January and a second, smaller intake for mid-year (semester 2) in some NATED programmes. Programmes with limited places, such as engineering trades, fill quickly, so apply as early as possible once a window is open.
Documents Needed
- A certified copy of the South African ID (or passport for foreign applicants)
- The latest school results, or Grade 9, Grade 11 or Grade 12 transcript, as applicable
- Proof of residence
- A previous N-level certificate, for students applying to a higher N level
- A parent or guardian’s ID, if the student is under 18 or applying for funding with a guardian
Scan the documents clearly before starting the online form so they can be uploaded in one session.
How to Apply Online
- Go to the official college website, emcol.co.za, and open the application page.
- Create an applicant profile with a valid email address and cell phone number.
- Choose the campus and programme, and list a second choice if the form allows it.
- Enter personal details and school or college results accurately.
- Upload the required documents.
- Submit the form and keep the reference or application number.
- Check email and SMS for updates, and follow any instructions about interviews, selection or registration.
Applications are free. The college does not charge for applying, and anyone asking for payment to secure a place is not acting for the college. Walk-in help is available at the campuses during office hours for students without internet access.
NSFAS Funding at Eastcape Midlands TVET College
NSFAS funds eligible students at public TVET colleges through bursaries, not loans. Funding is for students who are South African citizens, who qualify under the household income limit set by NSFAS, and who are registered for a qualification that NSFAS funds. The household income limit is currently R350,000 a year for most applicants.
A NSFAS bursary generally covers tuition and registration fees, and can include allowances for accommodation or transport, learning materials and living costs, depending on the year’s rules. Students apply separately on the NSFAS myNSFAS portal during the NSFAS application window, which usually opens late in the year and closes in January. Being accepted by the college does not mean NSFAS has approved funding, so apply to both.
After Applying: Selection and Registration
After an application is submitted, the college reviews the requirements and available places. Some programmes also use an interview or a placement test. Successful applicants receive an offer, and they must accept it and register within the stated period, usually in January. Late registration can lead to the place being given to someone else. At registration, students present original documents, pay any amount due that is not covered by funding, and receive their student number.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Applying for a programme without checking the entry subjects
- Submitting blurred or incomplete document scans
- Using an email address or cell number that is not checked regularly
- Missing the NSFAS application because the college application is done
- Trusting social media pages that ask for payment
