The DSTI-NRF Honours Scholarship 2027 call (the general honours window) closes on 23 November 2026. It opened on 7 July 2026, and applications are made online on the NRF Connect system. Manual or paper applications are not accepted. Universities also set their own earlier internal deadlines, so the date that matters most for you is usually your university’s postgraduate office date, not the NRF date.
The scholarship is run by the National Research Foundation (NRF) with the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation. This guide explains who qualifies, the 65% average, the household income limit, full and partial cost of study, the steps to apply and the mistakes that cost students their funding.
NRF Honours Scholarship 2027 Key Dates
The NRF runs several postgraduate windows for the 2027 academic year. Only the general honours window is still open at the time of writing.
| Funding opportunity | Opening date | Closing date |
|---|---|---|
| Honours (General) | 7 July 2026 | 23 November 2026 |
| NRF-SARAO Honours | 1 June 2026 | 14 August 2026 |
| First-time Master’s | 8 July 2026 | 15 July 2026 |
| First-time Doctoral | 16 July 2026 | 23 July 2026 |
| Master’s and Doctoral extension support | 16 April 2026 | 14 August 2026 |
Honours applicants who need an ISFAP assessment had an earlier cut-off of 24 August 2026. If you missed that, speak to your university’s financial aid or postgraduate office about what is still possible.

NRF Honours Internal Closing Date at Your University
The NRF does not receive applications directly from the public in the way many students expect. Each university screens and submits its own applicants, so every institution publishes an internal closing date that falls before 23 November. Several universities have already set dates in the last two weeks of November, and at least one has an internal date that falls at the end of October. If your university date has passed, contact the postgraduate or research office immediately and ask whether late submissions are possible, because many institutions refuse them.
Do not wait for the NRF deadline. A complete application needs academic records, a supervisor or departmental confirmation of your honours place and sometimes a motivation, and those documents take time to collect.

Who Qualifies for the DSTI-NRF Honours Scholarship?
The NRF sets a minimum academic requirement and a set of funding categories. The main conditions for the 2027 call are:
- A minimum of 65% in the previous degree, which for honours is the undergraduate degree (bachelor’s).
- A field of study in science, engineering, technology, social sciences or humanities.
- Admission to, or an application for, an honours programme at a South African public university that takes part in the NRF funding system.
- Being a first-time honours student for the year you apply for. Continuing students eligible for a second or third year of funding submit a progress report instead of a new application.
Meeting 65% makes you eligible to apply, not guaranteed to receive funding. Funds are limited, and universities rank candidates against each other.

NRF Honours Scholarship Full Cost of Study vs Partial Cost of Study
The NRF funds students under two categories, and the category decides how much of your study costs are covered.
Full Cost of Study (FCS)
Full Cost of Study is open only to South African citizens and permanent residents. You must also fall into one of these groups:
- You are financially needy, with a combined household income of R350,000 or less per year.
- You live with a disability.
- You are an exceptional academic achiever.
Partial Cost of Study (PCS)
Partial Cost of Study goes to 5% of international students. South African citizens and permanent residents who do not qualify for full cost of study but meet the other criteria can also be considered for the partial award.
The rand value of each award is set in the NRF Application and Funding Guide and Funding Framework attached to the call. The amount can change from year to year, so read the current guide rather than relying on last year’s figure.
NRF Honours Bursary Household Income Limit of R350,000
The income limit applies to the combined income of your household per year, not only the income of one parent. Be ready to prove it with documents, such as payslips, a letter from an employer, a social grant letter or a sworn statement for informal income. If your household income is above R350,000 and you are not disabled, your route to full funding is the exceptional academic achiever category, which depends on how strong your marks are compared with other applicants at your university.

Documents to Prepare for an NRF Honours Application
Each university has its own checklist, but the following are commonly required. Confirm the exact list with your postgraduate office.
- A certified copy of your South African ID, or your permanent residence permit or passport if you are an international applicant.
- Your full academic record showing the 65% average for the previous degree.
- Proof of acceptance or a pending application for the honours programme.
- Proof of household income if you apply under the financial need category.
- A medical or other supporting document if you apply under the disability category.
- Any motivation or referee details your university asks for.
How to Apply for the NRF Honours Scholarship Through NRF Connect
- Apply to your chosen honours programme at your university first, and make sure you meet its entry requirements.
- Ask the postgraduate or research office how that university handles NRF honours funding and what its internal closing date is.
- Register or log in on the NRF Connect system at nrfconnect.nrf.ac.za.
- Download and read the Application and Funding Guide and the Funding Framework for the 2027 call. The NRF tells applicants to use both at every step of the form.
- Complete the online application, choose the correct funding category and upload your documents.
- Submit before your university’s internal deadline, and keep the application reference number. Funding queries to the NRF require it.
- Wait for your university to confirm the outcome. Do not pay for honours fees on the assumption that funding is approved until you have an official outcome.
NRF Honours Scholarship Application Mistakes to Avoid
- Treating 23 November as your deadline. Your university’s date is earlier.
- Uploading an incomplete academic record. The record must show the marks used to calculate your 65% average.
- Choosing the wrong funding category. Read the category descriptions before you select one.
- Missing income proof. A financial need claim without documents is usually not assessed as need.
- Using a field of study outside the funded fields. The call covers science, engineering, technology, social sciences and humanities.
- Applying through a third-party website or agent. Only the NRF Connect system and your university office are valid routes, and no fee is charged for applying.
NRF Honours Funding Contacts and Support
Your university’s research or postgraduate office is the first contact point, because it screens and submits your application. For funding queries, you can email postgraduatequeries@risa.nrf.ac.za. The subject line must name the level (honours), the funding opportunity (for example, general) and your application reference number. For technical problems with the NRF Connect system, contact the NRF Support Desk on 012 481 4202 or at supportdesk@nrf.ac.za. The NRF also runs an anonymous fraud line on 0800 111 729 for anyone who is asked to pay for funding.

What Happens After You Apply?
Universities review applications, rank them and submit their selected candidates within the NRF funding system. Outcomes are communicated through your university, not through social media or third parties. Allocations normally depend on your final undergraduate results, so confirm with your institution what happens if your final marks arrive after you apply. If you are unsuccessful, ask your university about bursaries from its own postgraduate funds, employers, and other national schemes so that you have a second option before registration.
How to Improve Your Chances of NRF Honours Funding
Funding is competitive, so the quality of your file matters. Submit early so that your postgraduate office can fix any problem before its deadline. Make sure your academic record is complete and shows the marks behind your average. Choose the funding category that truly fits your situation and support it with documents. Confirm your honours place in writing from the department. Finally, apply for a second source of funding at the same time, such as a university postgraduate bursary, so that a refusal does not stop you from registering in 2027.
