University of Mpumalanga Late Applications 2027 [ Will UMP Accept Late Applications? ]

The University of Mpumalanga (UMP) has not announced a general late-application period for the 2027 intake. The official closing date for undergraduate programmes and advanced diplomas is 30 November 2026, and applications for 2027 opened on 1 June 2026. A late application is not guaranteed to be considered, so any applicant who is still deciding should apply before 30 November 2026.

This guide explains the official closing dates, what “late” means at UMP, the application fee position for 2027, the documents required, how to apply online step by step, and what to do if the deadline has passed. It also answers common questions such as “does UMP accept late applications”, “UMP closing date 2027” and “UMP application status”.

UMP Closing Dates for 2027

The university publishes two closing dates on its application page. Which one applies depends on the level of study.

Programme level Opening date Closing date
Undergraduate programmes and Advanced Diplomas 1 June 2026 30 November 2026
Honours, Postgraduate Diplomas, Master’s and Doctoral programmes 1 June 2026 30 January 2027

Some unofficial guides list different dates for honours and postgraduate diplomas, or even an earlier undergraduate date. The dates in the table are the ones shown on the university’s own application process page. Always check that page again before submitting, because a university can change a date.

Does UMP Accept Late Applications for 2027?

The official application page does not mention late applications for 2027. There is no announced “late window”, no extended deadline and no list of programmes that remain open after 30 November 2026. In practice this means:

  • A late application is not promised. The university decides after the closing date whether it can still consider anyone.
  • Where a university does consider a late application, it is usually only for programmes that still have unfilled places.
  • Competitive programmes, especially those with limited seats, usually fill before the closing date.

In earlier years UMP has sometimes reopened for the intake that followed the first round, and that is where “UMP late applications” headlines come from. A reopening for one year does not mean the same will happen for 2027. Treat 30 November 2026 as the real deadline and treat any later opportunity as a bonus.

What “Late” Means at UMP

An application is late when the online form is submitted after the closing date for that programme level. The system measures when the form reaches 100% and is submitted, not when you started it. A form that is only partly completed on 30 November 2026 is not a submitted application.

Two common mistakes make an applicant late without realising it:

  • Stopping before the documents upload step, so the progress bar does not reach 100%.
  • Leaving the application until the final week, when many applicants use the portal at the same time and slow performance can delay uploads.

UMP Application Fee 2027

Previously the application fee was R200 for South African applicants, R400 for SADC applicants and R550 for other international applicants, paid with the ID or student number as the reference. Older guides still show these amounts, and the university’s application page still lists them.

In October 2026 the university announced that it has scrapped application fees for 2027 and onwards, following approval by its Council. The stated reason is that fees create an unnecessary barrier for applicants from disadvantaged backgrounds. Because the application page and the announcement do not match, follow this approach:

  1. Open the online application portal and check whether a fee step or proof of payment is still requested.
  2. Do not pay a fee into any account that is not shown on the official portal or page.
  3. If the portal asks for proof of payment and you are unsure, email the applications office before paying.

The effective date of the change has not been spelled out beyond “2027 and onwards”, so check the official website for the confirmed position.

How to Apply to UMP Online Step by Step

  1. Open the Online Applications page on the UMP website.
  2. Enter your biographical details to start a new application.
  3. Create a 5-digit PIN and write down your student number. You need both to log back in.
  4. Accept the POPI Act terms and the application rules.
  5. Complete your personal, address and contact details, disability status and matric subjects.
  6. Add any previous studies and upload your documents.
  7. Choose up to two programmes in order of preference, and apply for residence if you need accommodation.
  8. Check that your progress shows 100% before you log out.

Choosing two programmes means you are considered for your second choice if you do not meet the requirements for the first. Choose both carefully, because they decide where the university places you.

UMP Programmes and Campuses

UMP is a public university with its main campus in Mbombela (Nelspruit) and a second campus at Siyabuswa. Its programmes sit in three faculties: Agriculture and Natural Sciences, Economics, Development and Business Sciences, and Education. Each programme has its own admission requirements, including minimum subject levels and an Admission Point Score (APS), so read the requirements for the programme before choosing it. The university’s application page does not list these requirements, so check the programme pages or contact the admissions office.

How to Check Your UMP Application Status

After you submit, log in with your student number and PIN to see the status of each programme choice. Statuses typically move from received to under review to a final outcome. Admission offers for the intake usually depend on your final Grade 12 results if you applied while still in school, so an early “provisionally accepted” message can still change.

If the status does not change for several weeks, email the applications office and give your student number and ID number. Do not send your PIN by email.

NSFAS and Funding When Applying Late

Applying to the university and applying for funding are separate steps. A student who wants NSFAS support applies on the NSFAS portal during the NSFAS window, and a university application alone does not secure funding. Around 85% of registered UMP students in 2026 are funded by NSFAS, which shows how many applicants depend on this route. If you apply late to UMP, check the NSFAS closing date separately and apply for funding as soon as the window is open, so that a late university application does not also become a missed funding application.

What to Do If You Miss the 30 November 2026 Deadline

  • Email studentapplications@ump.ac.za with your full name, ID number and the programme you want, and ask whether the programme still accepts applications for 2027.
  • Check the UMP website and official social media pages for a notice of late or extended applications in December 2026 and January 2027.
  • Apply to a second institution that is still open, so you have an option while you wait.
  • Consider a TVET college, where many programmes accept applications into the new year.
  • Keep copies of your results ready, because late openings are usually short and fill quickly.

Tips for Getting a Complete Application In

  • Apply well before 30 November 2026 rather than on the closing day.
  • Prepare certified copies before you open the form.
  • Use a stable internet connection and a laptop or computer if possible, since uploads on a phone can fail.
  • Save your student number and PIN in a safe place.
  • Use a personal email address and a phone number that you check daily.
