UCT Postgraduate Financial Aid Bursary 2027 [ Closing 10 November, Need-Based Funding ]

The University of Cape Town (UCT) Postgraduate Financial Aid Bursary for 2027 closes on 10 November 2026. It is open to South African citizens and permanent residents who plan to register for an Honours, Master’s or Doctoral degree at UCT in 2027, and it is based on financial need only. Merit-based bursary applications are not accepted for 2027, so applicants whose family income is too high should not apply.

This guide explains the UCT postgraduate bursary requirements for 2027, the income limits for Financial Aid and the GAP tuition bursary, how long funding lasts, which degrees are excluded, and the steps to apply. It also covers the documents to prepare, common reasons for rejection and answers to frequently asked questions.

Is the UCT Postgraduate Bursary Merit-Based or Need-Based?

For 2027 the bursary is need-based only. UCT states that merit-based applications are not being accepted, and that applicants who do not meet the financial need criteria will not be able to proceed to an award. An application from a student whose family income falls above the upper limit is not considered for any other form of UCT funding either, because no merit bursary exists for that year.

A strong academic record still matters, because the minimum average of 70% applies to every applicant. The difference is that a high average alone does not win an award. Financial need is the deciding factor.

Who Is Eligible for the UCT Postgraduate Financial Aid Bursary?

An applicant must meet all of the following general conditions:

  • Be a South African citizen or a permanent resident.
  • Have applied for a place at UCT through the Admissions Office. Only applicants who have applied for an academic place are considered for funding.
  • Apply for a full-time Honours, Master’s or Doctoral programme in the relevant department or faculty.
  • Hold a minimum average of 70% in the previous qualification.
  • Not be employed for more than 20 hours per week during the year of study.
  • Meet the financial need criteria set through the National Means Test.

In line with its transformation agenda, UCT gives priority to Black South African and permanent resident applicants who qualify on financial need. In this context “Black” includes African, Coloured and Indian students.

UCT Postgraduate Bursary Income Limit 2027

UCT uses the National Means Test, the same assessment method used by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), to decide each applicant’s assessed need. The result places an applicant in one of three groups.

Gross annual family income Outcome
Below R350,000 Eligible for Financial Aid
R350,001 to R600,000 Eligible for a GAP tuition bursary
Above R600,000 Not eligible for need-based support

The figures refer to the gross income of the whole family, not only the applicant’s own earnings. Accurate income proof is therefore the most important part of the application.

What Is the UCT GAP Tuition Bursary?

The GAP tuition bursary is meant for students whose families earn too much for full Financial Aid but still struggle to pay fees. A GAP recipient receives a percentage of the approved course tuition fees. A Financial Aid recipient receives a contribution towards the cost of studies for the academic year. In both cases the amount is decided by UCT after the assessment, and the university does not publish a fixed rand value for every applicant.

How Long Does the Funding Last?

Funding is limited to the normal duration of the first years of each degree, and successful applicants are funded for the stated period without reapplying each year.

Degree Funded period
Honours One year
Master’s Two years (first and second year only)
Doctoral Three years (first, second and third year only)

The award is renewed automatically while the student remains compliant with the conditions of the award. A student who moves from Honours to Master’s, or from Master’s to a doctorate, must submit a new application for the next degree.

Which Degrees Are Not Funded?

Several programmes are excluded, and checking this list early saves a wasted application:

  • Professional degrees and full coursework Master’s degrees, including the MBA and MMed.
  • The fourth year of a Bachelor’s degree, the PGCE, the LLB and postgraduate certificates and diplomas.
  • A second degree at the same level as one already held.
  • Master’s and Doctoral degrees with a research component of less than 33.3%.
  • Part-time study.

Can I Hold an NRF Bursary and a UCT Bursary Together?

No. National Research Foundation (NRF) funding cannot be held at the same time as UCT funding. UCT encourages every Honours, Master’s and Doctoral applicant who is eligible for NRF funding to apply for it as well. Applicants should also look for support from the department or research group where they will register, and from external donors. Applying to several sources increases the chance of securing at least one award.

Documents to Prepare for the UCT Financial Aid Application

All supporting documentation must be submitted for assessment. Typical documents for a means-test application include:

  • A certified copy of the applicant’s South African identity document, or proof of permanent residence.
  • Identity documents of parents, guardians or spouse, where relevant.
  • Recent payslips, an income tax assessment, or other proof of family income.
  • Proof of any social grants received.
  • Academic transcripts showing the previous qualification and the 70% average.
  • Proof that an admission application to UCT has been submitted.

The exact checklist appears on the application form, so follow that list over any general guide. If the wrong documents are submitted, UCT allows two days to resubmit the correct ones. That window is short, so keep scanned copies ready before the form is opened.

How to Apply for UCT Postgraduate Funding for 2027

  1. Apply for admission to the Honours, Master’s or Doctoral programme through the UCT Admissions Office.
  2. Read the 2027 award criteria published by the Postgraduate Funding Office and confirm that the degree and family income fit.
  3. Gather income and identity documents, and scan them clearly.
  4. Complete the financial aid application form for Honours, Master’s and Doctoral students.
  5. Upload every required document and submit before the closing date of 10 November 2026.
  6. Apply separately to the NRF and any other funder for which you qualify.
  7. Monitor your email for requests for corrections and for the outcome.

Students who were supported by NSFAS or UCT as undergraduates, or who received full Financial Aid at Honours level, still complete the form again for their next degree. Earlier support does not carry over automatically.

UCT also runs webinars between August and October that explain how to complete the form and how awards are made. If a recording or a later session is not available, send a question through the Service Request tile or write to pgfunding@uct.ac.za.

Common Reasons an Application Does Not Succeed

  • Applying on merit alone with a family income above R600,000.
  • Choosing an excluded degree such as an MBA or a coursework Master’s.
  • Having no admission application on record at UCT.
  • Submitting incomplete or unclear income documents.
  • Working more than 20 hours per week.
  • Missing the closing date.
  • Falling below the 70% average.

What Happens After You Apply?

The Postgraduate Funding Office assesses each form against the National Means Test, checks the documents, and decides whether the applicant is Financial Aid eligible, GAP eligible or not eligible. Priority goes to qualifying Black South African and permanent resident applicants. Outcomes are communicated by the university, and an award depends on the admission offer being accepted. UCT can cancel an award and recover money already paid if the holder breaks the conditions of award, for example by taking up employment beyond the allowed hours.

Because bursaries are tied to admission, applicants should also track their admission status in the UCT application portal and respond to every request from the funding office within the stated time.

Other Postgraduate Funding Options in South Africa

A student who does not qualify, or who is not funded, has other routes. The NRF offers postgraduate bursaries across fields, many departments hold research grants that pay stipends to students on funded projects, and external donors and employers run their own bursary schemes. Honours, Master’s and PhD students can also consult the funding information on the UCT postgraduate noticeboard, which lists the awards administered through the Postgraduate Funding Office.
